Agriculture under threat from climate change and Garnaut
8 Jul 2008

Ninety two per cent of irrigated agriculture in the Murray Darling Basin will go by 2100 says the Garnaut report. However not acting now against climate change will cost much more says Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. ABARE estimates not acting will cost 79 per cent of commodity exports by 2050. Rudd says an emission trading scheme is the best way forward for reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions from Australia. The EU has a trading scheme in place, while Canada, NZ, Japan and the US are moving towards schemes.
