Wheat belt needs to become tree belt
9 Jul 2008

Traditional wheat and grain farming systems in Western Australia''s northern wheatbelt will be rendered unviable unless dramatic changes to make farming more flexible and drought-proof are introduced soon says farmer group Evergreen Farming. Scientists'' predictions of further rainfall declines will force farmers in the region to make dramatic changes to farming systems to remain viable, including potentially using trees *or* shrubs planted to absorb greenhouse gases as a commodity similar to wheat, beef *or* lamb.
