Banks turn away from southern farmers
6 Apr 2009

Farmers in Western Australia, Northern NSW and Queensland are preparing for a good winter season after recent rains while croppers and graziers south of about Dubbo in NSW are expecting to miss out again. Recent good seasons in northern and western farm regions has led to log jams at ports, particularly in WA, and rail network delays in Queensland. Southern farmers must decide this month about what and how much to plant this winter based on expectations of an autumn break and planting rain. Banks are reported to be wary of lending to southern farmers with uncertain weather outlooks. Farm debt rose $7.2 billion last year to $58 billion.
