Murray irrigators face even drier times
8 Apr 2009

Inflows to the Murray Darling river system were the lowest in 117 years during the three months to March says the Murray Darling Basin Commission. Water storages in the basin were at 16 per cent of capacity in February with just 1470 gigalitres, well below the January long term average of 5,400 gigalitres. Algal blooms have begun appearing in the Murray in recent weeks said the Commission. While states had made provisions for critical human needs, irrigators will need sustained above average rainfall over the next few months to maintain water supplies. Even drier conditions are expected for the southern region of the basin over the next three months.
