AWI joins Sheep CRC 5 Mar 2003
Australian Wool Innovation has joined the Sheep Co-operative Research Centre as a major partner. AWI will initially contribute $450,000 to the $70-million CRC, including $300,000 for education and post-graduate study with a focus on wool at Australian universities.
The move, announced by AWI chairman Ian McLachlan, is a major shift in policy from that of the former AWI board and chairman Col Dorber. Mr Dorber rejected joining the CRC, citing lack of control and accountability. Before that, AWI had been expected to contribute $350,000 in funding per year. After the former board and chairman's decision not to join, the CRC regrouped and sought funding elsewhere.
Mr McLachlan also announced that AWI has abandoned the objective of a 15 per cent return on funds invested, stating that the productivity and profitability of producers is more important.
