Fox furs - back in fashion?
5 Mar 2003

Bruce Bickford, a wool producer from Ravenswood in Victoria, would like to see fox furs back in fashion as a way of controlling fox numbers. Mr Bickford lost 40 Merino lambs to fox attacks in 2002.

The fur trade still exists, he said, but surely the market could be bigger. He'd like to see people wearing a lot more Australian fox fur.

Mr Bickford is a regular fox shooter and spotlights once a week during Autumn and Winter to protect the sheep on his 350ha property. There are still a lot of foxes out there, he said.

Mr Bickford was attending the summit held by the Victorian Farmers' Federation on fox control. Attendees at the summit want the Victorian Government to extend its bounty on fox tails. Mr Bickford said the bounty should be increased to $15-$20 a tail, to encourage more shooters, and also be extended right across Australia. This needs to be done if governments are serious about getting fox numbers down, he stated.
