WA's Shayne Smith is Young Farmer of the Year 25 Jul 2003
On July 22, 2003, the Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, announced that Australia's 2003 Young Farmer of the Year is Shayne Smith, 23, a wheat and sheep farmer of Dombleyung in Western Australia. Mr Truss presented the award to Mr Smith at the Australia Rural Youth Convention official dinner in Geelong, Victoria.
Eight State finalists competed for the Young Farmer of the Year Award over two days in several skills areas, including occupational health and safety, office management, environmental conservation, fencing, machinery maintenance, public speaking and general agricultural knowledge.
The Federal Government is providing $75,000 for the event over the next three years. "This sponsorship further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of young people in rural industries, and developing a pool of skilled young people with talent, vision and enthusiasm to build a stronger and more positive rural sector", Mr Truss said.
The Government recently called for applications for the fourth Young Rural Leaders' Course in Canberra from 13-16 October 2003.
