China snaps up world's softest bale of wool
15 Mar 2004

The finest-ever bale of wool has been sold to Shanghai-based company Kathaytex for $675,000. The 90-kilogram bale, produced in Queensland, is the first ever to break the 12-micron barrier and netted its producer $75,000 per kilogram - the highest bale price for Australia and second highest globally. The next-highest superfine bale price was $8,000 per kilogram at the start of the season.

The Kathaytex buyer said the record bale was "a bargain", as he had expected to pay between $1.5 million and $1.8 million. He said the wool will probably be made into men's suits, which could retail for up to $100,000 each.

The Age, 13/3/04, page 10.
