OJD found on 9 WA farms
8 Apr 2004

The Western Australian sheep industry has abandoned hopes of eradicating Ovine Johne's Disease in the state after it was found on nine properties. The OJD Advisory Committee said that eradicating the disease in WA with current technology is not feasible. Chairman Chris Richardson said OJD could be managed economically using vaccination and other flock management tools. A plan is being developed to help producers understand the disease.

WA is Australia's only state deemed to be free of the disease, after meeting criteria following a 1999 national agreement. WA's Department of Agriculture said a review of the state's OJD Free Zone status would involve an "orderly transition".
