Three-pronged attack on livestock pox 20 Apr 2004
Maintaining Australia's disease-free status for capripox disease of livestock is the aim of a three-year research project involving Australian Wool Innovation, CSIRO and Canadian scientists. Australia has never had an outbreak of capripox disease, and the project will enhance the ability to detect infected animals and undertake the stringent post-outbreak surveillance regimen needed to restore the nation's disease-free status.
CSIRO Livestock Industries' Dr David Boyle says the project will deliver a range of diagnostic tests for the capripox diseases, including histopathology, electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction tests for primary diagnosis and antibody detection tests for post-outbreak surveillance.
Australian Wool Innovation's Dr Scott Williams says while the risk of the diseases being introduced into Australia is low, the impact of an outbreak would be second only to estimated losses from a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
