Pigs at number two in the bad five
15 Jun 2004

Feral pigs are rated at No. 2 on Western Australia's list of animal and bird pests. Despite the huge recorded impact of wild dogs across the state, they ranked at No. 10. Foxes topped the list, which also included mice, native birds and feral cats in the top five pests.

The National Feral Animal Control Program said feral pigs have a much smaller distribution in WA than the eastern states, but this is predicted to increase. WA agencies are trying to curb the problem before it gets out of hand. The state has received $51,000 to fight feral pigs from $500,000 federal government funding to NFACP.

The Pest Animal Control Co-operative Research Centre said wild dogs are the top priority in WA in terms of agricultural costs. There are so many reports of sheep losses, with woolgrowers saying they can't continue unless something is done soon.

Farm Weekly, 10/6/04.
