Studies look at sheep integration 6 Aug 2004
Members of the Pastoralists' and Graziers' Association met recently at Mount Magnet and discussed the management of different sheep breeds, as well as strategies to address fibre and genetic contamination. Following that meeting, four priority working groups were formed comprising pastoralists and WA Agriculture Department representatives.
The first group looked at the development of effective fencing and associated management practices to keep Merinos and exotic breeds separate. The second group focused on the Straying Stock and Dividing Fences Act, while a third group was established to develop a ewe productivity trial comparing Merinos and other meat breeds in the rangelands. The fourth will initiate best practice management guidelines for exotic breeds.
The four groups will report back to the PGA pastoral committee chairman in a teleconference with Agriculture Department officials. PGA pastoral director Edgar Richardson said the aim of the four groups is to involve Merino and exotic breeds producers in coming to consensus on the future management of all breeds in the rangelands.
