Canola and cotton prices rises offset wheat’s decline
13 Sep 2004

Strong canola and cotton prices helped push the Westpac NFF Rural Commodity Index up one per cent during August. National Farmers' Federation business and economics chair, Charles Burke, said the index had fallen 6.6 per cent during the past year, and that despite steady commodity prices in August, there was still uncertainty over the current climatic outlook. He said poor winter rains, particularly in parts of Queensland and NSW, were partly responsible for an 11 per cent drop in winter grains production. The Westpac NFF Rural Commodity Index also showed that continued demand for beef helped offset falls in the prices of wheat, sugar and wool.
