Wool clip poised for recovery
14 Sep 2004

Australian Wool Innovation forecasts that shorn wool production will rise to 500,000 tonnes in 2004 from 480,000 tonnes in 2003. Last year’s clip marked the low point of a steady decline in the clip that began in the late 1980s. David James, chair of AWI’s forecasting committee, said rising lamb numbers and better rain were expected to lead to more sheep and higher fleece weights. Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics economist Dale Ashton said he expected small increases in wool production over the next few years as farmers built their flocks to take advantage of good lamb prices.
