Luxury life produce select wool profits
6 Dec 2004

Italian luxury designer Loro Piana has paid $227,500 for a single 91kg bale of the 11.8 micron thick wool from the Highlander Farm at Tumbarumba, southwest of Canberra. The 50 sheep with the golden fleece live in a shed, listen to Italian opera and Slim Dusty, and eat a mix of grass, straw and grains. Each ram grows enough wool to make one made-to-measure Loro Piana suit, costing almost $15,000.

At $2500 a kilogram, Loro Piana paid 150 times the normal price of a quality Australian wool to secure the finest bale on the market.
