Timberland shuns Aussie wool 9 May 2005
US retail chain Timberland said it would no longer stock product made with Australian grown wool, in another victory for the lobby group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA is targeting the practice of mulesing, in which sheep farmers cut away some skin from a sheep’s rear to prevent flystrike. Timberland has 200 stores worldwide and turnover of US$1.5 billion, but it is not clear what percentage of sales relates to woollen products sourced from Australian grown wool.
