Some wool growers seek talks with PETA
1 Aug 2005

Wool growers are becoming divided over the best approach to confronting the lobbying by the US-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals against the practice of “mulesing” young sheep. The practice - under which farmers cut skin from a lamb’s rear - reduces the incidence of fly-strike. The Australian Wool Growers Association said court action by some other wool growers, through the dominant industry body WoolProducers, was a waste of the compulsory industry levy paid by wool growers. PETA said it was hopeful of a workable solution. WoolProducers said the AWGA negotiations with PETA were “fundamentally wrong” and said PETA’s objective is to “seriously damage and then ultimately shut down the Australian wool industry.”
