Wheat and dairy farms make sound profits 2 Mar 2006
Wheat and dairy farming are the most profitable niches in the agricultural sector in Australia. Analysis of farm profits by the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics shows that the average dairy farm can expect to earn a profit of $24,000 this year, up from $20,000 last year. The average wheat farm can expect to earn a profit of $33,000 this year, after a loss of $2000 last year. The ABARE data confirms there are returns to scale in most niches. An average beef farm with more than 300 head can expect to earn a profit of $9000 this year. The average beef farm with less than 300 head can expect a loss of $40,000. In sheep, farms with at least 3000 head would still make a minor loss. Farms with less than 3000 sheep would make a loss of $25,000.
