Cash grants not tax breaks for ‘green’ farm projects 13 Apr 2006
The federal government said it would fund two pilot projects in Victoria and Tasmania to test ways of encouraging farmers to invest in environmental projects on their farms. Farmers will receive cash grants, though the government ruled out use of any such payments as production subsidies. One pilot project, in Victoria, will allocate $500,000 to deliver incentives and advice to woolgrowers to improve whole-of-farm grazing management. Goulburn-Broken Catchment Management Authority will manage this project. A second pilot project in Tasmania qualifies for a grant of $150,000 implementing farm planning and recognition systems with a group of 20 farmers in the Tamar region.
