Livestock numbers down
22 Aug 2007

The Meat and Livestock Association has cut its forecast for sheep slaughtering in 2007-08 by 40 per cent to 7.9 million. Mutton slaughterings have dropped sharply following increase clearance numbers caused by the drought last year, causing Middle Eastern markets to look for cheaper sheep from China and South America. The MLA's forecast for live exports is down by 15.5 per cent to 3.5 million. Rebuilding of the nation's cheep flock will be slow due to low prices for wool.
