Women pick up the shears
4 Oct 2007

Of the 1,300 shearers in Western Australia the industry estimates that 15 are female. Belinda Box is 24 years old and after a year in the sheds she can shear 120 sheep in a day. Ms Box said that while the job can be tough the rewards are there as she now earns about $250 per day but faster shearers can earn over $400 per day. "You cop a bit of hassle from the blokes but it's all in good fun and you just have to give it back," she said. Modern shearing sheds usually have at least one woman but they are more likely to sweep up wool or do the sorting.
