Farmers split over mulesing decision
11 Mar 2008

Farmers are split on whether or not to immediately end the practice of mulesing sheep amid growing boycotts of Australian wool. The Victorian Farmers Federation has criticised the NSW Farmers Association for calling for an end to the practice, saying that they had played into the hands of animal rights activists and destroyed national unity on the issue. VFF president, Simon Ramsay, said that "it just gives the animal rights groups more opportunity to try [to] divide the industry". The Western Australian Department of Agriculture and Food said yesterday that mulesing at its research stations would end within three weeks.
