Retailers expand wool boycott
6 May 2008

Graziers have hit out at animal rights activists following the announcement that another two major European retailers have joined the boycott of wool from mulesed sheep. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has convinced AB Lindex, which operates 346 stores across northern Europe, and RNB Retail and Brands, which has 450 stores across 12 countries, to join the boycott as it claims there are more humane methods of preventing flystrike than mulesing. The industry has agreed to phase out mulesing by 2010 and is already trying alternatives such as clips to remove the skin without blood, injections which remove wool growing on the skin, and anaesthetic. Wool grower Alan Brown from Wagga Wagga said that he was disappointed to hear about the latest boycotts. "We are trying to breed sheep that don't require mulesing but that takes time, we are certainly not sitting on our hands," he said.
